Shiraz / Syrah

Shiraz / Syrah

Powerful, black-fruited, often aged in oak, syrah/Shiraz comes in varying styles but at the top (such as Hermitage) can be spectacular and very long-lived.

There is no question that Syrah is now the most fashionable red grape for new plantings in many New World countries, especially South Africa and Chile.

Les Vignerons d’Estezargues, Cuvee des Galets, Cotes du Rhone, 2019

Juicy, unfiltered blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah: raspberryish mouthful, mildly spicy and very moreish. A long term favourite at SVS. Now-2022
This is the 16th vintage we have shipped of this deliciously fruity Côtes du Rhône, from this unfailingly reliable co-operative of just ten growers between Avignon and Nîmes. All wines here are from sustainably or organically farmed grapes, made naturally (i.e. without any additives bar the merest bit of sulphur to ensure...

Les Vignerons d’Estézargues

Rhone, France

This small co-operative, in a little village in the Gard, just west of Avignon, is now getting more attention here because oenologist Denis Deschamps makes "natural" wines, i.e. without adding any sulphur (or anything else) during winemaking.

We find this mildly amusing: we have been quietly shipping decent volumes of these delicious, forward-fruited,...

Grenache / Garnacha

Grenache / Garnacha

Grenache grows well in hot, dry regions, though it can develop very high (15 degrees+) alcohol.

As such it is grown principally in Southern France and Spain (as Garnacha). It is usually blended with other varieties in the Southern Rhône and Languedoc (Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, Cinsaut and others).

Its flavour usually encompasses the...

Piekenierskloof, Stonedance, Hutton Red, Swartland, 2019

A pleasing blend of Shiraz and Grenache. The nose has a pretty, cherry quality. On the palate, fresh red and dark fruit flavours combine nicely. This is rounded, soft and eminently drinkable on it's own. Alternatively it would be a delight with homemade burgers (beef, venison or vegetarian!) Now-2023
Hutton is a type of soil in the Cape; usually to be found on the lower slopes and plains. Derived from granite, it's yellowish or rust-coloured, mildly acidic, but has decent...

Piekenierskloof

South Africa

For years I had been hearing about Piekenierskloof – not as a wine producer but as a source of grapes for numerous other winemakers, young and old.

I didn’t realise that Piekenierskloof wasn’t just a ward (the smallest geographical unit in the South African regional classification) but one large estate, formerly a...

Mas des Brousses, Chasseur des Brousses, IGP Saint-Guilhem-Le-Desert, 2019

This is from organically farmed (and certified) vines up in the wild hills at Puechabon, north-west Montpellier. The recipe for this successful marriage of Bordeaux and the south has changed over recent years; in this vintage it's based on young vine Mourvedre with old vine Merlot, plus a little Syrah and Grenache. Juicy, sappy red cherry, strawberry and blackcurrant flavours - spiced by a little of Mourvedre's savouriness. This feels crunchy and vital - very moreish and perfect for...

Amidst the rolling scrub-covered hills around Puéchabon and the pebble-strewn terrasses near the Hérault river lie the domaine’s plots of vines.

Vriesenhof, Limited Release Red Blend, 2018

Vriesenhof only occasionally releases this wine, made with some components left out of the final selection of their top Bordeaux-style red, Kallista. It’s a gutsy blend of Merlot, Cabernets Franc and Sauvignon and some Petit Verdot, at a nice stage of evolution, with hints of violets, leather and spice over raspberries and blackberries. Plenty of flesh and grip for keeping. Perfumed aromatics. Absolutely in the Bordeaux idiom but with new world generosity - perfect for those who enjoy a...

Vriesenhof

Stellenbosch, South Africa

To visit Vriesenhof is to spend time with a Cape legend.

Founder, owner and cellar master is Jan ‘Boland’ Coetzee. Son of a west coast farmer, in the 1970s he was simultaneously both a Springbok under Doc Craven and winemaker at Kanonkop.

In 1980 he bought his own farm on the windy slopes of Paradyskloof on the southern...

Winter Reds

Two bottles of each of the six reds, all generous, warming and food-friendly.

SVS is one of the nicest merchants to deal with. Fabulous choices of producer and wines, friendly cheerful service, keen prices and boundless enthusiasm. Top wine critics (eg Jancis Robinson) often rave about the SVS portfolio of wines. Simon and his team also have a 'philanthropic' soft spot for South African wines where the whole wine trade suffered not just an export ban on wine but a domestic one too for a while. You cannot go wrong with any wine in the portfolio. Buy with confidence.

I look to a wine merchant to explore wine regions in person and discover excellent producers. Then of course to put good information on their web site, to provide accessible and friendly advice and to make the buying process easy and reliable. SVS ticks all these boxes. I am a very satisfied customer.
