Consentido, Macabeo, Yecla, 2020

Macabeo (Macabeu in the Languedoc-Roussillon) is the same grape as Viura, the principal ingredient in most white Rioja. Here it's picked early in September for freshness. We were knocked out by this example, from its open, stone-fruited scent to its excitingly ripe and weighty mid-palate of white peach and fresh grapes, all the way to a dry, savoury and stoney finish. Terrific at the price, and a cool label too. Now-2022

La Combe Saint-Paul,Viognier, IGP Pays d'Oc, 2020

As usual this is more on the light, fresh, floral side of Viognier than more obviously weighty or over-ripe examples. Lime flower perfume. True fresh apricot flavour, just a little appealing fat and a good dry finish. As charming as ever, a lovely aperitif. Now-2022

La Combe Saint-Paul

La Clape, France

Paul and Line Maury might be our youngest producers but winemaking runs in the genes.

Paul’s grandparents and great grandparents were winemakers specialising in single varietal wines, and we list his fine examples of Vermentino, Chardonnay and Viognier.

In 2008 Paul came across the opportunity to buy vines on La Clape and create his own domaine....

Tenuta Casali, Bassamarea Bianco, Bianco Rubicone, 2020

This pure Trebbiano shows the simple virtues of the grape – crisp citrus with an orange accent, lightly herbal, nicely rounded, with a fresh finish. Honest, refreshing and tasty. Now-2022"The widely planted Trebbiano grape has a reputation for producing light and anodyne wine - but the Casali family's organically tended vines of the local variant, Trebbiano Romagnolo, make a refreshing, orchard fruit-flavoured example. A useful all-rounder". Simon Taylor, SVS

Tenuta Casali

Mercato Saraceno, Emilia Romagna, Italy

Ask Monty Waldin, an English wine expert resident in Tuscany, where he would look for value in Italy, and he says Emilia Romagna - inspiring furious tasting and meeting the Casali family.

Based in Mercato Saraceno south of Cesena, the family have 20 hectares of grapes, mostly on hillsides on the edge of the Apennines.

Carignan

Carignan is the grape which really distinguishes the red wines of the Languedoc and Roussillon from those of the southern Rhône (in the latter Grenache is ubiquitous and dominant, and Syrah and Mourvèdre are the preferred blending grapes).

It has been a much maligned grape. For example Jancis Robinson’s Oxford Companion to Wine thunders: "Carignan,...

Goedverwacht, Great Expectations Crane Red, Merlot, Robertson, 2019

From a vineyard with a high clay content which suits Merlot. It’s always made in a slightly old-fashioned style, gutsy and lightly smokey, with oaky flavours coming from the suspension of staves in the tank for seven months. But this vintage is fresher and more lifted than in the past, without losing its heartiness and generous plum fruit with hints of coffee and spice. Now-2022

SVS is one of the nicest merchants to deal with. Fabulous choices of producer and wines, friendly cheerful service, keen prices and boundless enthusiasm. Top wine critics (eg Jancis Robinson) often rave about the SVS portfolio of wines. Simon and his team also have a 'philanthropic' soft spot for South African wines where the whole wine trade suffered not just an export ban on wine but a domestic one too for a while. You cannot go wrong with any wine in the portfolio. Buy with confidence.

I look to a wine merchant to explore wine regions in person and discover excellent producers. Then of course to put good information on their web site, to provide accessible and friendly advice and to make the buying process easy and reliable. SVS ticks all these boxes. I am a very satisfied customer.
