Beaujolais

"…if red wine can be nubile, this red wine is" - Andrew Jefford, in The New France

That immediate fruitiness of the Gamay grape, allied to refreshing acidity, moderate alcohol levels - usually 12.5 degrees to 13 degrees - and ability to be served cool (don’t overchill, or you won’t taste anything), makes Beaujolais the definitive summer...

Gamay

Gamay is Beaujolais! Lovely medium to light red wine, with fresh acidity for summer drinking with great potential for ageing in good vintages.

Also planted in: the Loire; odd new plantings in New World, e.g. New Zealand

La Chapelle des Bois, Fleurie, Grand Pre, 2021

Fleurie has an association with “flowery” – but the best wines can have substance too. Bright youthful purple. Vibrant red-berried and black-cherried fruit. Very traditional example, showing a lively bite and enough fruit tannins to accompany food well. Now-2024

Cru (from the 10 Cru villages) Beaujolais remains undervalued. The levity and charm of juicy Gamay is out of fashion presumably because people still hold bad memories of thin Beaujolais Nouveau. But with warmer summers the old vines of the region produce deliciously ripe juice. Fleurie has an association with "flowery" - but the best wines can have backbone too.

La Chapelle des Bois, long owned by the Coudert family, has been bought by Frederic Montangeron, a go-ahead guy in Beaujolais. but the former owners' traditional label lives on with this wine.

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
