Chateau Barrejat, Madiran, Tradition, 2018

"Deep purple. Smooth, sweet fruit with more lift and less tannin (despite Tannat's reputation) than a typical red bordeaux." GV 16/20, Drink 2020-2023, Jancis Robinson MW, May 2021
Deeply hued and concentrated blend of 60% of the local grape Tannat with 20% each of Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc; a great value, old fashioned, country wine.
Vibrant purple.  Forward, drink-me combination of vibrant black fruit, bright acid and light tannin. Dry, savoury,...

Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Francis a parent of Cabernet Sauvignon.

A cross of it with Sauvignon Blanc resulted in Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Franc tends to be softer and has less tannins than Cabernet Sauvignon, although the two can be difficult to distinguish. Many of the red wines of the Loire are primarily Cabernet Franc.

Jancis Robinson

We get super excited when Jancis Robinson (or one of her team) write about our wine!

Voted the world's most influential wine critic in polls in the US, France and internationally in 2018, Jancis views herself as a wine writer rather than a wine critic.

She writes daily for JancisRobinson.com and weekly for the Financial Times. She is founder-editor of The Oxford Companion...

Artisan Wines, Sankt Laurent Pure, Burgenland, 2018

Sankt Laurent, or St. Laurent, is a dark-hued grape grown widely in eastern Austria and Czechia. Here it shows a frank scent of crushed hedgerow fruit; and then sappy, black cherry and blueberry flavours. Open, crunchy and uncomplicated; perfect for light chilling in summer and drinking with anything piggy from cured meats, a Scotch egg or roast ham – or cold roast chicken. Now-2024

Sankt Laurent

Sankt Laurent / St Laurent

St Laurent (sometimes written in French as Saint Laurent or in German as Sankt Laurent) is a highly aromatic dark-skinned wine grape variety.

Like many great traditions, its origins shrouded in mystery, St. Laurent is believed to have resulted from a crossing of Pinot noir with an unknown second parent.

La Combe Saint Paul, Gres Rouges, La Clape, 2019

This enticing red is named after the vineyard soils derived from grés rouge (red sandstone). 60% Syrah with 20% each of Mourvèdre and Grenache, basically unoaked (10% in old barrels). Lovely deep and glossy hue; and an enticing perfume of brambly fruit with a roasted hint. Youthful, deliciously ripe blackberriy and mulberry core with negligible tannins. A well-priced, smartly presented bottle from this prestigious appellation for enjoying immediately. Now-2023

Grenache / Garnacha

Grenache / Garnacha

Grenache grows well in hot, dry regions, though it can develop very high (15 degrees+) alcohol.

As such it is grown principally in Southern France and Spain (as Garnacha). It is usually blended with other varieties in the Southern Rhône and Languedoc (Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, Cinsaut and others).

Its flavour usually encompasses the...

Carinae, Cuvée Philippe, Mendoza, 2018

A sumptuous, lightly oaked blend of 37% Malbec and Syrah and 26% Cabernet Sauvignon. Each grape brings something special to the party: the Malbec blackberry juiciness; the Syrah a blueberry note; and the Cabernet sharp blackcurrant. As a whole it's tinged with oak spice from the barrels and shows classy aromatics. Now-2023

Carinae

Mendoza, Argentina

Frenchman Philippe Subra, with his wife Brigitte, came to Argentina as the national boss of EDF, the French energy giant - but loved the country so much he cleverly bought some long-established vineyards and settled there, on the south side of Mendoza. He has built a small cellar - boutique indeed, whilst wholly lacking the pretension that word implies!

Fiorano, I Paoli Sangiovese, Marche IGT, 2019

This delightful Sangiovese is Fiorano's principal wine, now renamed I Paoli after the owners Paolo Beretta and Paola Massi. The 2019 vintage is youthful and exciting. A fragrant, red-fruited scent prefaces a fairly wild and dramatic flowering on the palate. Unlike previous vintages this would definitely benefit from drinking with food - for example any pork dishes or tomato based pasta - as it seems to show more mass; delivers an aromatic expansiveness; and then a dry, lightly savoury...

Cossignano, Marche, Italy

We started working with Paolo Beretta (formerly a dentist) and Paola Massi (a research pharmacologist) in 2015, with immediate success.

Their wines exemplify perfectly the virtues of small-scale - they tend just 10 hectares of vines - organic cultivation. All exhibit an entrancing purity of fruit, and all are bottled with minimal sulphur...

Piekenierskloof, Cinsault, 2020

From vines planted in 1976; half aged in tank and half in old oak. Like all the best Cinsault, this exudes that lovely perfume composed of floral notes and ripe berries. Velvety, showing vivid strawberry fruit, bright and not in the least jammy. Juicy, persistent, with a little tannin; this combines the best of sunny new world fruit with old world refinement. Piekenierskloof

South Africa

For years I had been hearing about Piekenierskloof – not as a wine producer but as a source of grapes for numerous other winemakers, young and old.

I didn’t realise that Piekenierskloof wasn’t just a ward (the smallest geographical unit in the South African regional classification) but one large estate, formerly a...

I have used Stone, Vine & Sun for a number of years now and have found their advice in seeking wines to my taste most helpful. They have often found some small vineyards that need assistance and have provided excellent wines. I will always look to support my local services where possible, for if we do not they will cease to exist leaving faceless conglomerates. They are always a happy organisation to interact with and their local delivery service works very well.

Great service and fantastic products. We have never had a bad bottle with any of our orders, and I can guarantee your friends will not have the same producers/vintages available at Stone, Vine, & Sun.

As always SVS delivered my recent order next working day with no errors. My only problem with them as a wine merchant is that they regularly send me more mouth watering offers than my budget or my cellar can cope with. My kind of merchant. So many great finds, many from less fashionable (read expensive) regions, but always carefully selected, good value and good of their kind.

Many classic wines plus lots examples from independents practicing natural methods including a good selection from South Africa. The price spectrum includes many delicious wines under £10. An informative website makes ordering simple with rapid delivery. This year I confidently dipped my toe into en Primeur from Burgundy based on advice. They have won many awards and I expect SVS to win many more. Brian from Kent.
