Northern Rhône
The narrow valley of the Rhône south of Lyon is the spiritual home of Syrah. Here the vineyards crawl up the steep slopes, largely on the west side of the river. As Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage and Cornas become steadily more expensive, we continue to champion the cause of St. Joseph, which shares similarly sparse soils derived from decayed...

Marine Roussel, Domaine du Joncier, Lirac, France
Years ago, when Oz Clarke mentioned to us that he was looking for entertaining French winemakers to visit for the first series of Oz and James's Big Wine Adventure, we sent him off to see Marine Roussel at Domaine du Joncier in the southern Rhône, just the other side of the river from Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Of course she starred; she...

Grenache / Garnacha
Grenache grows well in hot, dry regions, though it can develop very high (15 degrees+) alcohol.

"Full bottle 1,148 g. Back label urges us to play boules, toast at the bar, enjoy this Grenache that does a pirouette. Unoaked, organically and biodynamically farmed and hand-harvested Grenache from 45-year-old vines.
Transparent crimson. Light, rather simple nose. A bit of carbonic maceration? Spicy finish. Tastes very 'Paris wine bar' to me. Dry, rather sudden finish and lots of emphasis on the fruity front palate. Deliberately glou-glou, so made (well) for a certain sort of drinker who will adore this." 16.5/20 Drink 2021–2023, Jancis Robinson, October 2021
