Frederic Borderie, Chateaux Les Combes and Les Gravieres de la Brandille, Bordeaux, France

Modestly he ascribes their success to his vineyards being on gravelly river terraces of the Isle river, an underrated terroir with some similarities to the...

Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Francis a parent of Cabernet Sauvignon.

A cross of it with Sauvignon Blanc resulted in Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Franc tends to be softer and has less tannins than Cabernet Sauvignon, although the two can be difficult to distinguish. Many of the red wines of the Loire are primarily Cabernet Franc.

Chateau Les Gravieres de la Brandille, Bordeaux Superieur, 2018

Frédéric Borderie's principal wine, 65% Merlot with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, unoaked, showing a good deep hue; ripe blackcurrant fruit with appealing freshness, just a hint of supporting tannin, and a decent, lightly savoury finish. This is a red Bordeaux you could drink on its own, with huge pleasure, but it's probably better with anything from a slice of hard cheese to lamb. Already drinking beautifully (and for years); as ever it's a very superior Bordeaux Rouge - as demonstrated by a Gilbert & Gaillard gold medal 2020.  Now-2025

Our favourite wine merchant never fails to delight. Delicious wines at every price point - including a few gems below £10 in our favourites list. We’ve really enjoyed the sun case as an easy way to be introduced to new wines which we’ve then reordered. Friendly informative service completes the package.
