Vriesenhof, Conservation Collection Pinotage, NV

This is an unusual wine - in that it's a cross vintage blend of 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2019. It's the last wine made from old bush vines planted in 1976, now being grubbed up. Typical Pinotage cooked fruit aromas, with hints of... Read More

Vriesenhof

Stellenbosch, South Africa

To visit Vriesenhof is to spend time with a Cape legend.

Founder, owner and cellar master is Jan ‘Boland’ Coetzee. Son of a west coast farmer, in the 1970s he was simultaneously both a Springbok under Doc Craven and winemaker at Kanonkop.

In 1980 he bought his own farm on the windy slopes of Paradyskloof on the southern...

Pinotage

Pinotage: a living national treasure or "the only grape variety which is carcinogenic"?

Pinotage is the one original South African grape, developed by Abraham Perold in Stellenbosch in 1925 by crossing Pinot Noir and Cinsault, then known as Hermitage.

It has the acidity of the former parent and the warm generosity of the latter. South Africans can’t make up...

Typical Pinotage cooked fruit aromas, with hints of leather and green pepper. Bright red fruit, enlivened by decent cut, with smoky and creamy touches. A great wine for curries and spicy red meat dishes - with the benefit of a charitable donation to rhinoceros conservation too. Now-2024

To visit Vriesenhof is to spend time with a Cape legend. Founder, owner and cellar master is Jan 'Boland' Coetzee. Son of a west coast farmer, in the 1970s he was simultaneously both a Springbok under Doc Craven and winemaker at Kanonkop. In 1980 he bought his own farm on the windy slopes of Paradyskloof on the southern edge of Stellenbosch. In the 1980s he was one of the first suitcase smugglers of Chardonnay cuttings (in his son's nappies or the lining of a jacket) from Burgundy into the Cape. Though he was a mover and shaker, he also worked with enormous patience - he had loved Pinot Noir for over two decades but didn't release one until he felt ready in 1990. Earlier this year he completed his 54th vintage. Yet there he was in March 2020, humbly pouring wine for visitors.

Our favourite wine merchant never fails to delight. Delicious wines at every price point - including a few gems below £10 in our favourites list. We’ve really enjoyed the sun case as an easy way to be introduced to new wines which we’ve then reordered. Friendly informative service completes the package.
