Francoise & Denis Clair, Hautes Côtes de Beaune Rouge, 2018

The Hautes Cotes - the higher ground on top of the hills above the slopes of the Premier and Grand Crus of the Cote d'Or - used to be too cool for the production of ripe, enjoyable Pinot Noir. With climate change that has changed, so this has become an appellation which is a source of great value Pinot in warmer vintages. This is really excellent: a bright and inky purple; with an aromatic nose and a rich palate of red fruits. Just a whisper of supple tannins. Now-2025

Burgundy

The Burgundy Pyramid

Making sense of the complexity of the complexity of Burgundy isn’t easy.

Though Burgundy only comprises 5% of France’s vineyard area, it holds 100 different Appellations, 25% of the entire French total.  There are no less than 5,000 growers, 85% of whom own less than 10 hectares, and four fifths of them make wine.

Pasji Rep, Jebatschin Red, Vipavska Dolina, 2017

A beautifully ripe and flamboyant wine, delivering polished berried fruit with vanilla. Perfectly fresh, suave and clean, it's very akin to a smart and more expensive right bank Bordeaux. This impresses hugely at tastings - so don't ignore it simply because it's Slovenian! Now-2023

When one travels in Slovenia one is often impressed by the quality of the wines from Bordeaux grapes grown there. From organically grown fruit at the eastern end of the...

Pasji Rep

Vipava Valley, Slovenia

Samo Premrn is such an accomplished winemaker, crafting an exemplary range of organically certified wines from local and international varieties on the north-facing slopes in the eastern, narrow end of the Vipava Valley in western Slovenia.

Open to the Adriatic at the western end and with a cold mountain wind from the north, the valley is known as a...

Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Francis a parent of Cabernet Sauvignon.

A cross of it with Sauvignon Blanc resulted in Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Franc tends to be softer and has less tannins than Cabernet Sauvignon, although the two can be difficult to distinguish. Many of the red wines of the Loire are primarily Cabernet Franc.

Wickhams Road, Pinot Noir, Gippsland, 2020

Gippsland is an up-and-coming coastal region east and south of Melbourne. Untasted as yet, but we anticipate this will have the same approachable Pinot character as its predecessors: bright red fruit, strawberry and cherry; supple and friendly. Now-2023

Carneros, Avant Garde Pinot Noir, 2019

Carneros was co-founded by Taittinger in 1987 as a sparkling wine estate, but the quality of the Pinot demanded bottling on its own by 1992. Carneros is a sweet spot for Pinot, cooled by proximity to San Pablo Bay. Burgundian winemaking (open top fermenters and ageing in French oak) delivers an appealingly strawberryish glass of pure pleasure. Youthful but svelte; pure and jewelly but correctly dry; and with just a hint of umami savouriness hiding in the background, this needs the merest...

Errazuriz, Pinot Noir, Aconcagua Costa, 2019

The latest vintage of the Aconcagua Costa Pinot is again brilliant. From vineyards on schist at Manzanar, it benefits from proximity to the cold Pacific Ocean, just 12 kilometres away, as the vines are refreshed and kept healthy by sea breezes. This successfully combines the virtues of superclean, ripe Chilean fruit with a burgundian freshness, restraint and tannin/acid spine. Perfumed cherries and raspberries. Delicious. Now-2023

Domaine des Dieux, Josephine Pinot Noir, Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, 2015

From cool vineyards at the top of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. As the vines here age, this wine is getting more refined: the 2015 is certainly the best vintage we have tasted. French oak, about 28% new. This is a rich, velvety example, with overt raspberry and cherry fruit, wrapped in coffee-scented oak. Fine acid spine. Terrific aromatics on a long finish. Classy and complete. Now-2023

Just wanted to say thank you so much for sending my order of 2 x Domaine Begude Rosé to my son and daughter-in-law - I couldn't believe that they received it within a day of my placing the order with you. That is IMPRESSIVE, especially given the current trying times.
