Fichet, Macon-Burgy, Les 3 Terroirs, 2022

Olivier Fichet’s unoaked Chardonnay comes from three plots of vines - some very old - in the excellent terroir of the northern Mâconnais near Viré. From the hot summer of 2022, this is richer than usual: nicely weighted, with hints of grapefruit and almonds. Now-2025

Making sense of the complexity of the complexity of Burgundy isn’t easy.

Though Burgundy only comprises 5% of France’s vineyard area, it holds 100 different Appellations, 25% of the entire French total.  There are no less than 5,000 growers, 85% of whom own less than 10 hectares, and four fifths of them make wine.

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.

Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Look out for unoaked Chardonnay, it can make a pleasant change, and usually goes down very well with all those people who...

Domaine d'Elise, Petit Chablis, 2022

A benchmark, far better than most Chablis from the huge co-operatives: cool and oyster-shell fresh in the mouth, excellent concentration and correctly lactic. Perfect for simply cooked plaice or cod. Now-2027
Frederic Prain owns one block of vineyards, so chalky and stony as to appear like a white beach, on the boundary of the Chablis appellations: his Petit Chablis abuts the 1er Cru Côte de Lechet. A single oak among the vines appears on his labels. Up on a hill, overlooking Milly...

Antoine et Laurent Robin, Chablis 2021

From vines averaging 45 years old (the earliest planted in 1954), on a vineyard facing the 1er Cru of Vaillons, the Robins' village Chablis is immediately attractive: from a pretty nose (hawthorn blossom?) to a limpidly marine palate with associations of salinity and citrus. Transparent, delicious - and could only be Chablis. Now-2025
Given much reduced allocations for the frost-damaged 2021 vintage from our long-term partners in Chablis, Domaines d’Elise and Fourrey, we had...

Domaine Sainte Barbe, Macon Villages, Les Tilles, 2021

From a small, half a hectare parcel, on clay and limestone planted in the late 1960s. Jean-Marie revelled in the chance to make a cool vintage after 2019 and 2020. Fermented in stainless steel tanks. A wonderfully intense and energising wine. Green apple and melon, with a little blossom. This wine can be enjoyed immediately and has the acidity to last for years to come. Now-2026

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
