Carinae, Tannat, Harmonie, Mendoza, 2020
A new wine for us, from vines at 1100m. of altitude in the Uco Valley, given a few months in a mix of French and American oak. Solid, youthful purple. Pretty, floral scent. This shows lovely red-berried and cherry flavours, quite supple and melting. Splendid density of fruit. Twist of liquorice. One could argue that just as Malbec, the grape of Cahors, thrives in the hot, high altitude vineyards of Argentina, so does Tannat, a grape which also has its roots in SW France around Madiran....

Frenchman Philippe Subra, with his wife Brigitte, came to Argentina as the national boss of EDF, the French energy giant - but loved the country so much he cleverly bought some long-established vineyards and settled there, on the south side of Mendoza. He has built a small cellar - boutique indeed, whilst wholly lacking the pretension that word implies!

Carinae, Malbec, Hommage, Mendoza, 2014
Amazing old-vine Malbec from 95 year old vines in a high altitude vineyard at Calle Cobos, Perdriel in Luján de Cuyo, just south of Mendoza: from tiny yields and a strict grape selection; aged in new and second fill French barrels. Deep robe, showing some maturity. Such an attractive perfume: cooked strawberries and blackberries overlaid with cigar-box oak and spice. Concentrated, with fine-grained tannins, offering autumnal fruit - with a seductive, liqueur element - spiked with hints of...

Malbec
Malbec is a red grape whose home is in south-west France, and specifically in the appellation of Cahors.
There (known as Cot) it makes a strongly flavoured wine which is, all too often, tannic and rustic and needs several years ageing to show its best.
Like Carmenère in Chile, it is much more successful in Argentina than in its homeland. Introduced in the mid 19th...

Carinae, Prestige, Mendoza, 2014
About 60% Malbec, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Syrah, a selection of the best grapes of the vintage, aged in new barrels for 18 months. Inky. Sumptuous aromas of black fruit compote and mocha. Hugely powerful and intense, yet fresh and balanced - and both the Cabernet and Syrah contribute cassis flavours. Very lush black cherry and blackcurrant core, spiced with nutmeg. Very concentrated; and delivering a long finish with liquorice, very dark chocolate and mint. Now-2025
