The Burgundy Pyramid
Making sense of the complexity of the complexity of Burgundy isn’t easy.
Though Burgundy only comprises 5% of France’s vineyard area, it holds 100 different Appellations, 25% of the entire French total. There are no less than 5,000 growers, 85% of whom own less than 10 hectares, and four fifths of them make wine.

Meursault, France
At Stone, Vine & Sun we are so proud to have introduced Thiébault Verdereau’s wines to the UK market.
His is a fascinating story. When his maternal grandfather Raoul Verdereau retired in 1974, his family decided to keep his three hectares of vines but not farm them.
Thiébault, born and raised in Alsace, became a sommelier but...

Domaine Huber-Verdereau, Volnay 1er Cru, Les Fremiets, 2018
From a very small parcel of vines planted in 1984 in this sought after 1er cru, "un terroir très solaire", sheltered and which attracts the morning sun. The soil is orange here, rich in iron oxide. Deep ruby red. Highly perfumed nose - classic Volnay character. Rich, concentrated fruit and tannins. Expansive finish - great promise. 2022-2030
Mid crimson. Rather a powdery nose. And the fruit from this sunny spot is arguably just a tiny bit too jammy for comfort. Currently reminds me a little of a red Spangle (hard candy). There is some immediate pleasure but perhaps not that much Burgundian earthiness. But perhaps these certified biodynamic vines are just singing a particularly pure, uncomplicated song that will become much more complex with time. I'm giving the wine the benefit of the doubt. 16.5+ Drink 2025-2035 Jancis Robinson MW 13/01/20
