Pasji Rep, Jebatschin White, Vipavska Dolina, 2018

A lightly oaked blend based on 50% Malvasia from ancient vines with Rebula and some Zelen, picked late and given six days skin contact.

This is a reticent wine - don't serve too cold and do decant (into a jug and back in the bottle works fine) so it opens out. The aromas are of stone fruit and floral oils; followed by a silky palate (no excess of skin contact tannins), lightly creamy with cereal (creamed maize?) and herbal notes. Finishes long, with peppery minerality. Now-2022

Samo Premrn is such an accomplished winemaker, crafting an exemplary range of organically certified wines from local and international varieties on the north-facing slopes in the eastern, narrow end of the Vipava Valley in western Slovenia. Open to the Adriatic at the western end and with a cold mountain wind from the north, the valley is known as a sweet spot for Pinot Noir, but he is also committed to the revival of the Zelen grape, only grown here. Samo's wines are all intense and pure, the product of perfectly grown grapes handled with great skill.
