Domaine du Grand Arc

Corbieres, France

Nicolas Schenk is now running the family estate created by his father Bruno. Bruno Schenk is still a legend here at SVS.

He was an engineer in Alsace before he came to buy vineyards in the Corbieres in 1995. At first he sent his grapes to the co-operative, but after one frost affected year he decided he had to come out and bottle his own wines to...

Carignan

Carignan is the grape which really distinguishes the red wines of the Languedoc and Roussillon from those of the southern Rhône (in the latter Grenache is ubiquitous and dominant, and Syrah and Mourvèdre are the preferred blending grapes).

It has been a much maligned grape. For example Jancis Robinson’s Oxford Companion to Wine thunders: "Carignan,...

Domaine du Grand Arc, Cuvee des Quarante, Corbieres, 2018

Based on 45% Carignan with 35% Grenache and 20% Syrah, all in barrel, about 20% new: a blend at the Schenk cellar first made by father Bruno when he was forty years old - hence the name. Dark fruited nose with accents of chocolate, dense texture and masses of red fruit on a smooth and silky frame. Bold. Now-2024

We have been buying from Grand Arc since 2002: here Nicolas Schenk is now running the family estate created by his father Bruno. The vines lie on classic argilo-calcaire soils, with some sandstone, around Cucugnan, in a valley of the Massif des Corbières in the south of the appellation, overlooked by the amazing hill-top Cathar castles of Quéribus and Peyrepertuse. The family have been following organic principles for 20 years but Nicolas was behind the final push to certification for the 2016 vintage. He has a keen interest in
biodynamics and is also continuing his father's pursuit of minimal intervention, in particular using natural yeasts and only a tiny amount of sulphur at bottling.

Always friendly and helpful-much better than supermarket wines for not much more! The doorstep dozen is brilliant!

I have used Stone, Vine & Sun for a number of years now and have found their advice in seeking wines to my taste most helpful. They have often found some small vineyards that need assistance and have provided excellent wines. I will always look to support my local services where possible, for if we do not they will cease to exist leaving faceless conglomerates. They are always a happy organisation to interact with and their local delivery service works very well.

Great service and fantastic products. We have never had a bad bottle with any of our orders, and I can guarantee your friends will not have the same producers/vintages available at Stone, Vine, & Sun.

As always SVS delivered my recent order next working day with no errors. My only problem with them as a wine merchant is that they regularly send me more mouth watering offers than my budget or my cellar can cope with. My kind of merchant. So many great finds, many from less fashionable (read expensive) regions, but always carefully selected, good value and good of their kind.

Many classic wines plus lots examples from independents practicing natural methods including a good selection from South Africa. The price spectrum includes many delicious wines under £10. An informative website makes ordering simple with rapid delivery. This year I confidently dipped my toe into en Primeur from Burgundy based on advice. They have won many awards and I expect SVS to win many more. Brian from Kent.

This is my all time favourite wine merchant. Innovative in approach, with a wonderful selection of new and old world wines. By far the best delivery service too, even in these straitened times!
