Faiveley, Gevrey-Chambertin, 1er Cru, La Combe aux Moines, 2017

Wine from a famed vineyard at a very fair price. Ripe and generous perfume; perfectly anticipating a full-flavoured mouthful of plump red fruit, fresh and crunchy, with good bite and structure. Very complete and should keep very well.... Read More

The Burgundy Pyramid

Making sense of the complexity of the complexity of Burgundy isn’t easy.

Though Burgundy only comprises 5% of France’s vineyard area, it holds 100 different Appellations, 25% of the entire French total.  There are no less than 5,000 growers, 85% of whom own less than 10 hectares, and four fifths of them make wine.

Very complete and should keep very well. Now-2028

Cask sample. Light to mid cherry red. Subtle aroma. Spicy and dark-fruited. Elegant but not particularly intense on the palate. Less immediately appealing than many of the Faiveley wines in this line-up but has serious harmony and long finish. A touch of oak evident on the aftertaste. 16.5/20. Drink 2023-2030.
