Azienda Agricola Boasso

Serralunga, Italy

The Boasso family’s cellar, in the tiny hamlet of Gabutti, lies just above the steep slope of their top vineyard, facing the little hilltop village of Serralunga across a deep valley.

The cellar is tiny but spotless and perfectly equipped. Nebbiolos from Serralunga have a famed reputation for quality, but also for firm tannins: these Barolos can be...

Boasso, Barolo Gabutti, 2015

From the Gabutti vineyard below the cellar, a one hectare, south-east facing site on calcareous marl at about 330m of altitude. From 100% Nebbiolo, this is part aged in traditional large Slavonian oak vats, with a proportion in smaller French oak barrels. Very open, with that distinctive Nebbiolo perfume of cooked strawberries, cough medicine and tar. Very concentrated and fat, unfolding a compôte of autumnal red and black fruit spiked with cinnamon and that tarry hint again. Silky tannins give correct underlying structure. Exotic.Best 2021-2030

"Deep ruby. Intense and sweet dark-fruit nose. Concentrated and finely structured with elevated acidity and a big build-up of proper muscular tannins on the finish. Long and accessible, except for the tannins. 17.5/20", Walter Speller, jancisrobinson.com, 25th June 2019.

"The nose is vivid, with redcurrant and raspberry aromas. For Serralunga, the attack is fresh and limpid with nimble tannins, yet it's also concentrated and sturdy, which doesn't preclude approachability, and the finish is long. 90/100", Stephen Brook, Decanter.com, January 2019.

Our favourite wine merchant never fails to delight. Delicious wines at every price point - including a few gems below £10 in our favourites list. We’ve really enjoyed the sun case as an easy way to be introduced to new wines which we’ve then reordered. Friendly informative service completes the package.
