Las Colinas del Ebro, Garnatxa Blanca, Terra Alta, 2019
100% white Grenache from clay/limestone vineyards about 500 metres up (Terra Alta = highlands) in Catalonia. Here the altitude brings cool nights; and a dry wind known as El Cierzo keeps the vines healthy, enabling this to be made from organically grown grapes. This latest vintage is the first made using wild ferments too, just giving it a fraction more interest – and it would cost perhaps 50% more if it came from the Rhône.
This has become one of our best regarded sub £10 whites. It’s such a useful all-rounder, light enough to enjoy on its own but also not so fruity that one can’t enjoy it with a wide range of fish and white meat dishes. Grapefruit scented with herbs - rosemary and bay leaf - with attractive texture and a distinct, lightly almondy finish. Now-2022
This wine scored 95/100, among only seven wines declared Outstanding in the Decanter tasting of 149 indigenous whites from Spain. Needless to say it was by far the cheapest among those seven! Here is the tasting note from one of the judges: “Great typicity. Very salty, fresh, grapey nose with a limey palate and wonderful texture and minerality. Intense apple and pear with perfectly balanced acidity”, Beth Willard, quoted in Decanter, May 2021 issue.
"This wine's flavour has been stuck in my brain ever since I first tasted it, and I have resisted the urge to write it up so I could save it as my aperitif white choice for Christmas Day. Slender, herbal, green apple and pear-kissed and mineral-soaked, this is quirky, yet thoroughly engaging. It is also under a tenner!" Matthew Jukes, 40 Best Wines for Christmas, The Daily Mail 14th December 2020
