Domaine Begude, Chardonnay, L'Etoile, Limoux, 2020

This is a star barrel-fermented Chardonnay, from very low yields - less than half those in Burgundy. It develops beautifully, with ripe citrus and buttery notes coming to the fore. Lots of volume and grip. Now-2025
We have been shipping wines from James Kinglake since 2010, soon after he left his life in the City to buy the Château Haute Begude, about 350 metres up in the foothills of the Pyrenees near Limoux. It's been tough in recent years: damaging late frosts, mildew and...

Domaine Begude

Limoux

We have been shipping wines from James Kinglake since he left his life in the City in 2003 to buy the Domaine La Begude, about 350 metres up in the foothills of the Pyrenees near Limoux.

"I could not quite afford to buy in Burgundy so I chose the next best thing". But it hasn't always been an easy ride: he acknowledges how tough it is to be a farmer: his...

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.

Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Look out for unoaked Chardonnay, it can make a pleasant change, and usually goes down very well with all those people who...

Lequin-Colin, Bourgogne Chardonnay Back to the Roots, 2019

Named because François deliberately gives this wine a traditional style of vinification: it's 100% barrel fermented, with 10% new oak; and given regular lees stirring to develop texture and breadth. Again with moderate alcohol, yet with no shortage of flavour and character. Nice toasty nose. This is fresh but lightly honeyed, balanced, with good heft. Already drinking well. Late 2021-2026

Burgundy

The Burgundy Pyramid

Making sense of the complexity of the complexity of Burgundy isn’t easy.

Though Burgundy only comprises 5% of France’s vineyard area, it holds 100 different Appellations, 25% of the entire French total.  There are no less than 5,000 growers, 85% of whom own less than 10 hectares, and four fifths of them make wine.

To make matters...

René Lequin-Colin

Santenay, France

This 9 hectare family domaine, which dates back over 300 years, has a lovely range of vineyards, deriving from the marital conjoining of Lequins from Santenay and Colins from Chassagne-Montrachet.

We think he makes no less than seventeen wines, though some in very small quantities, for example just one specially made small barrel of Batard-Montrachet!...

Pandolfi Price, Los Patricios Chardonnay, Valle del Itata, 2016

"It has an open aroma and the oak accompanies, but does not overwhelm. The fruit is ripe. On the palate, bitterness is highlighted in a positive way. A wine with a lot of flavour as well as very good salinity and acidity. Full." 17/20 Drink 2020-2030 Ferran Centelles www.jancisrobinson.com, August 2019François Massoc, a gentle, thoughtful man, is a master winemaker. Domaine des Dieux, Chardonnay, Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, 2016

Quite overt perfume - oak, tangerine and floral hints. Mid-weight, silky and lightly honeyed. Just developing the merest vegetal hint. Fine acid spine. Very long. Anthithesis of caricature Aussie Chard of old! Now-2024

Quails' Gate, Chardonnay, Okanagan Valley, 2017

The Quails' Gate estate in British Columbia lies in the lee of the Cascade mountains - which offer a rain shadow - and on the shores of Okanagan Lake - which tempers both winter and summer temperatures.  This offers aromas of cream and orchard fruits. The palate presents fresh stone fruit flavours, along with hints of butterscotch, biscuit and lemon. There's the merest intriguing, oxidative hint of russet apples too  It's an understated, classy, barrel-fermented Chardonnay....
