Domaine Fontanel, Rivesaltes Ambré, 1999
Jancis Robinson in The Financial Times Saturday 17th December 2011: “The product of another raid on some of the world’s stocks of mature sweet wine - in Roussillon this time. Heady and raisiny yet fresh. Caramel and rancio flavours. It would be great with bitter chocolate. Miraculously fresh, racy and dry on the finish. Quite a bargain considering its age and interest value.”
From late-picked, 60 year-old vines of Grenache Blanc and Gris. The Ambré - literally amber - tone develops after at least five years of mildly oxidative ageing in barrel, though this had nearly ten. It’s a remarkable wine which has built up a cult following among our customers. Deep golden-brown - this looks like old Cognac, and indeed smells quite like Cognac, with fumes of cooked plums, and a hint of sherry-like oxidation. Dates and toffee dominate, with accompanying subtleties, including walnuts and coffee: mysteriously delicious. Now-2015
